History
Bethpage was named after the Biblical town of Bethphage, which means ‘house of figs’. Established in 1843 as a farming community by Captain John Seaman and his family; it had been inhabited for centuries prior by various indigenous cultures.
The hamlet continued its agricultural roots until the late 19th century when it developed into an industrial community due to its proximity to nearby cities such as New York City and Philadelphia. Since the turn-of-the-century, the community has become suburbanized due to increasing development from urban areas.
Population
As of 2020 census data Bethpage has a population of 16,630 people residing within its 1 square mile area – with 20% living below the poverty line – making it one of the most densely populated areas on Long Island.
The racial demographics are more diverse than many other parts of Nassau County with 80% Caucasian descent, 10% African American descent, 4% Asian descent, 2% mixed race descent and 4 % other descents. As such it is considered one of the most culturally eclectic places on Long Island.

Bethpage’s educational system provides quality education for all students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade . It houses three elementary schools (Charles Campagne School , John F Kennedy School , John H West Elementary ), one intermediate school (Bethpage Middle School) and one high school (Bethpage High ).

Bethpage, NY is home to the North America Headquarters of technology company LogiTag and Cablevision. Bethpage was also the home of the Grumman plant that produced the Apollo Lunar Modules, or LEMs2. Bethpage State Park offers five golf courses to choose from. One of them, the Black Course, was the site of the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009.
