History

East Moriches is a small town in Suffolk County, located on the South Shore of Long Island in New York. It is most famously known for being the site of the tragic TWA Flight 800 explosion on July 17th, 1996, that claimed 230 lives. The remnants of this heartbreaking event can still be seen today, with parks throughout Smith Point and Center Moriches dedicated to those who lost their lives during the crash and a plaque honoring them at East Moriches Station.

East Moriches Station is an integral part of the town’s history. Situated near Pine Street and Railroad Avenue, it was originally built back in 1897 and has served more freight than passengers during its long life as a flag stop on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Although not used frequently today, it still stands as a reminder that even though tragedies may occur in our lives, we must carry on and cherish those who have gone before us.
