East Shoreham, formerly known as Woodville Landing in the 19th century, was a break in the bluffs where cordwood was loaded upon flat-bottom boats for trans-shipment. In 1900, developer James Warden renamed the area “Wardenclyffe” and also invited Nikola Tesla to establish his famous laboratory and radio tower nearby. Herbertt Hapgood took over the development of the community after Warden’s death in 1906 and renamed it Shoreham.
Shoreham Village made the transition from a summer community to a year-round one following the arrival of local employment opportunities and the extension of the Long Island Expressway to Eastern Long Island in the 1960s-1970s.
