History
Established in 1699 as the hamlet of “Farmingdale”, Farmingdale has been an integral part of New York’s history for centuries. From Sawmill farming to producing shoe laces, it has seen its share of industrial and agricultural production over the years. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road just after the Civil War in 1869 further increased its growth and population.
Population
As of 2020, Farmingdale has an estimated total population of 8,870 people according to the US Census Bureau. Of this number, the ethnic breakdown includes 28.3% white (Caucasian) people; 53.9% African American; 4.7% Asian; 13% Hispanic or Latino origin; 0.2% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders; and 0.7 % Another race or combination thereof.
Education
Primary education is provided by several nearby schools including Stag Lane Elementary School and Pinney Street Academy Middle School in Massapequa Park and Syosset Central School District in Jericho Terrace.
Farmingdale High School also serves as host to both these elementary schools as well as Commack High School and Wheatley Heights Alternative High School located a few miles away in Melville respectively.
For higher education there are a number of options nearby such as five academic colleges including iconic SUNY College at Old Westbury Stony Brook University, Adelphi University, Hofstra University, New York Institute of Technology or Nassau Community College.
