History

Founded in 1653 by three Englishmen from New Haven Connecticut and called henceforth “The Huntingtons”. Initially the residents traded and farmed commodity crops such as indigo and hemp. 

Over time more settlers moved into the area leading to population growth. Eventually a cotton mill was built which served as an important economic engine for many years. 

In 1790 the area was officially made part of The Town of Huntington. By today’s standards it is one of Long Island’s oldest communities having played an instrumental role throughout its storied history.

According to 2020 estimates, Huntington’s population stands near 19,438 people living in an area covering about 210 square miles making it one of Long Island’s largest Towns.
