Old Westbury is a hamlet located in Nassau County, New York. Previously known as Westbury, this area was an agricultural hub with a variety of estates of Long Island Gold Coast families from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century.

History

The Town of Oyster Bay was officially established in 1648; the first settlement at present-day Old Westbury dates to around 1658. In 1805, local residents founded their own church and named it after their favorite spot, “Westbury”.

A few years later, in 1822, the village separated from Oyster Bay and established itself as an independent town under its new name of “Old Westbury”. Discussions began in 1901 to make Old Westbury no longer part of the Town of Oyster Bay and became a separate village but failed when it came up for vote. Finally, in 1932, the New York State Legislature changed its classification from a town to a village and it became incorporated into its own municipality.
