History
Plainview, NY is steeped in history that dates back more than three centuries. One of the original settlers was Robert Williams, who came from Wales and bought land in the area in 1648. The hamlet was named “Manetto Hill” and later renamed “Plainview” due to its breathtaking view of Hempstead Plains from atop the Manetto Hills in 1885.
Farmers initially grew cucumbers for Heinz pickle factories located in nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville, until a blight affected their crop. This prompted them to switch to potatoes instead.
After World War II, when many GIs left New York City for rural life on Long Island, most farmers chose to sell said land resulting in an influx of inhabitants and rapid development over the period of 1950-1960 when the population rose from 1,155 people to over 35,000 individuals.
